Breast Reconstruction
Another form of breast surgery common to Dr. Geo Tabbal’s practice involves breast reconstruction for women in Frisco and Plano who have suffered from breast cancer. The consequence of undergoing mastectomy or lumpectomy for these women is often profound; while aiding in curing a patient’s disease, these surgeries can have a lasting effect from the emotional and psychological impact women experience from these physical changes. Dr. Tabbal understands that although breast reconstruction can provide solace, cancer treatment remains a challenging time in a patient’s life. That’s why he makes every effort to help guide and support his patients through the process of both immediate and delayed breast reconstruction.

Breast Reconstruction in Context
Dr. Tabbal performs breast reconstruction using a variety of techniques, ranging from implant-based breast reconstruction to free flap surgeries that use your own tissues to recreate the natural breast form. Common flap surgeries include techniques known as the DIEP (abdominal tissue) and PAP (thigh tissue) flaps. Choosing what time of reconstruction to undergo is an important decision, and Dr. Tabbal looks forward to providing the information needed to understand your options. In some ways, this information begins the process of giving back the self-control that many patients feel robbed of when first diagnosed.
Ultimately, there are two factors that matter most. First, Dr. Tabbal wants to make sure that you’re ready to make the right decision for your reconstruction. At times, this choice can be particularly challenging, given the stress breast cancer can create. Secondly, Dr. Tabbal always keeps the most important goal at the forefront of your care: ensuring that you are cured of this disease by ensuring that your cancer treatment remains the focus of your care. That’s why Dr. Tabbal never proposes any surgical intervention method that may interfere with your cancer treatment — and if ongoing treatment may compromise the results of the reconstruction, he will strongly recommend postponing it.
Your Breast Reconstruction Procedure
Dr. Tabbal will often use a combination of one or more types of reconstructive surgery to design a plan best suited for each patient. This includes using tissue expanders which are later replaced with breast implants or, rather, used as a temporizing method that will improve the results and outcomes associated with tissue, otherwise known as flap-based reconstruction (i.e., taking a section of tissue from another part of the body to reconstruct the breast mound).
