Neck Lift

As we age, the skin on our neck can lose its elasticity, leading to sagging skin, wrinkles, and excess fat. A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, can address these issues by removing excess skin, tightening underlying muscles, and improving the overall contour of the neck area. This procedure can not only enhance your physical appearance, but also boost confidence by restoring a more youthful and refined profile.

Frisco board-certified plastic surgeon Geo N. Tabbal, MD is deeply committed to helping patients achieve their desired appearance through neck lift surgery. What Is Neck Lift Surgery?

Neck lift surgery aims to enhance the appearance of a patient’s neck and jawline. This surgery is designed to address the look of a “turkey neck” and correct issues such as sagging skin, excess fat, and muscle banding in the neck area, often caused by aging or weight loss. A neck lift can ultimately produce a more defined neck contour and a more youthful appearance in this area.

This treatment can be performed on its own or with other surgical procedures for more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. A facelift can address common cosmetic concerns such as wrinkles and jowl formation, while eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper eyelids and reduce under-eye bags. Dr. Tabbal can talk with you about your options during the initial consultation and help determine the best treatment plan for your needs.

What Are the Benefits of a Neck Lift?

A neck lift offers both aesthetic and emotional benefits, including:

  • Improved Contour: Tightens sagging skin and reduces excess fat, typically resulting in a smoother, more defined neck and jawline.
  • Youthful Appearance: Helps to reverse signs of aging in the neck area, offering a younger-looking profile.
  • Reduced Wrinkles and Creases: Smooths out wrinkles and diminishes creases, enhancing skin texture.
  • Customizable Results: Can be tailored to individual needs and desired outcomes.
  • Boosted Confidence: Enhances self-esteem and body image as physical appearance is improved.
  • Complementary to Other Procedures: Often combined with other facial surgeries for a comprehensive revitalization.

Who Is a Candidate for a Neck Lift?

Candidates for a neck lift typically include individuals who are in good general health and have realistic expectations about the outcomes. Ideal candidates experience sagging skin, excess fat, or muscle banding in the neck area that contributes to an aged appearance. Individuals considering this procedure should not smoke, as smoking can complicate both the surgery and the healing process, and should plan to maintain a stable weight following surgery, as significant fluctuations can affect the results.

What Does the Neck Lift Procedure Involve?

The neck lift procedure involves several steps to improve the appearance of the neck. First, Dr. Tabbal will make small incisions behind the ears and sometimes under the chin. Through these incisions, excess fat may be removed using liposuction and sagging skin is excised. The underlying muscles and tissues are then tightened to enhance the neck’s contour. The incisions will then be closed with sutures, which are usually removed after about one week. The surgery generally lasts two to three hours and is performed under general anesthesia. In some cases, it may be recommended that additional procedures, such as a chin augmentation, are performed in combination with neck lift surgery to achieve optimal results.

How Is Recovery Following a Neck Lift?

Recovery following a neck lift often involves a few weeks of healing; however, most patients can return to non-strenuous activities within 14 days. Initially, patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter medications. A special compression garment might be recommended for a temporary period to reduce swelling and support the new contour of the neck. Avoiding vigorous exercise and direct sun exposure is crucial during the healing process.
